Drawing III: Walk the Line

A project where we had to "draw a line" and then walk it. I came up with a physical line that I walked in someone else shoes. Physically walking the line in segments. A man made line made of man made products, walked by a man.

Drawing III: Drawing With Water

I drew with water today. I played with the concept of the water reacting to natural elements.

My first photo is of a ring of water made by a cup. It shows that although a tiny amount of water might not be noticeable, on the right surface it stands out. A demonstration of time as well. The longer the water ring was on the ground the lighter it got. The ground absorbed it all eventually. It plays on the ideas that nothing lasts forever in time.

The second drawing with water is under the smoking area sign. Long drips of water trail down to the ground. I feel that smoking isn't good for ones self and that it pulls you down or slows you in a way. Much the way the water reacted to the repetition of painting it in the same spot.

My third and fifth drawings spans across a wall and floor. With this and the fifth drawing I wanted to give a sense of direction. Much like a path you walk. Kind of playing off of the other assignment, walking the line, just being conscious as to where you are going, what lies ahead, and what lies behind. I wanted to experiment with the differences on horizontal plains and vertical so I have one each.

The fourth drawing is of a body shape on the bench. Being in Florida and the weather being so warm I wanted to re create a common sign here. I exaggerated it to an extreme to get the point across and to be clear with what it is. Its a representational creation of something that is artificial that is usually created naturally.

The Sixth drawing is playing with the idea of natural elements. I painted water onto the side of the bucket to capture what happens when gravity takes over. The bucket would drip drops of water on the ground in various size, shape and proximity to each other depending on how much the bucket was teetering.

My seventh drawing was an experiment to see what would happen when drops of water were released on the handle in the stairway. The drops of water ended up not running over the edge of the handle like I suspected they would but instead pushed to the very edge and stopped. Just an interesting experiment.

The Eighth drawing is what I like to refer to as a perspective drawing. During that time of the day I outlined the shadow made by a railing on the ground. It would show a different drawing or perspective at a different time of day. The drawing is always changing and only lines up once a day.

My ninth drawing is a negative of another common sign, wet footprints. Instead of wetting my feet I painted around them. A very similar kind of technique to what you do when you were a child tracing your hand. Another play on time and how things are not permanent. As well as a play on the path/line you walk.

My final drawing I think relates to the most to the path that you walk and where you are headed. A line of water trailing down the stairs (or up the stairs) signifies that life always isn't a straight path. Sometimes you have to twists and turns, sometime minimal and sometimes extreme.

Drawing III: Found Objects

This assignment was a semester long one where we had to collect objects we found. For myself, I didn't want the items to necessarily be trash but things that I just happen to find, trash or not, whether I knew about them and forgot about them until they were refound or just found for the first time. My objects were: a pen, which I found on my walk home one day from school stuck in the ground. A piece of elastic that I found on a different route to my house that caught my eye because of its bright color. A hub cap cover from a car that a few weeks ago I watched go up on a curb and must have lost it then and I came across it a few weeks later. Some tags in my camera bag of my first pair of sandals that I bought from my work that I must have stuck in there and forgot about. A pair of shoes that I found one day going through a closet at work that are two different sizes and thus, unsellable for us. A chap stick that upon getting into bed one night when I returned home that I found in my bed sheets. A business card that I found in my wallet from the teller at the bank, who, when meeting her for the first time commented on my toe shoes. Finally a 4 pack folder that for stuck on my shoes one day while I was walking home one afternoon. These objects to some may be trash and to others they may be treasures, for this assignment they came into being useful for this assignment. If it weren't for this assignment I would have just over looked them or thought nothing of them really if I were to come across them. The assignment has had me take granted in finding object and not just over looking them but making myself think more about how they got there or where they were going. This in turn inspired my response drawing for each of these objects. Because I would most likely overlook the objects as something that was insignificant that I potentially would be "blind" to them. For my response drawings I have done "blind" contour drawings of each of them to link the process in going about finding them in relationship to what I might usually do upon coming across them. From there I went in and added color. I tried my best to make "blind" watercolors of them on top of the drawings but watercolor and paint as a medium require you to refill your brush with paint unlike a pen, aside from that there is a dry time so sometime colors begin to bleed together. In some respects it lends itself more to the process in finding the object I think.

Drawing III: 10'x2" Drawing

Here is my 10'x2" drawing for drawing three. This was the first assignment of the class.

Drawing III: Maps

Here are my two maps. One is of the route Sarah took to school that day with Josh on his scooter and the other is a map of Kim's favorite place, the beach, from the art building. Sarah's is done with motor oil and ink on cardboard while Kim's is done in sand at the beach.
